Norwegian chef Helge Olsen and Brisbane chef Corey Thoms wanted to create something unique, something you couldn’t find anywhere in Brisbane. Drawing on Nordic influences in both the food and the interior, Lokal + Co opened about a month ago in West End.

Helge and Corey worked together at Cicada for seven years before Lokal + Co was born. They wanted to find a space that spoke to them – ultimately, they found it before they even knew what they were looking for.

The West End space was an empty shell that they spruced up with materials they sourced themselves, bestowing a minimalist Scandi feel featuring whites, greys, and timbers. Even sourcing unique salt and pepper shakers from Denmark and growing succulents a few months earlier has played a part in creating a welcoming vibe.

On the food front the focus is on simplicity and health. It’s all about using high quality ingredients, making everything from scratch, and cooking dishes quickly without compromising quality. In every dish you can feel the love that goes into it.

Green olive tapenade is served on toasted Brasserie Bread quinoa & soya sourdough with poached eggs and a beautiful salad of zucchini, currants, and Persian feta. Or if you fancy a breakfast roll, it’s assembled with bacon, egg, spinach and housemade BBQ sauce on Brasserie Bread milk bun. That BBQ sauce hits all the right marks with spice and flavour.

Fresh juices and Allpress coffee complete the cafe experience at Lokal + Co. But stay tuned for when they start serving booze – there will be a bar menu and they’ll extend opening hours, too.
