The Flying Duck Hotel, Prahran

Tucked away in Prahran, The Flying Duck is an oasis away from the concrete jungle of the city. Alive with greenery and a laidback beer garden, the gastro pub is the perfect place for kicking back with a beer or two.

But beers and wines aren’t the only boozy pick-me-ups at the Duck. Cocktails come with clever names: from Duck Duck Gooseberry (made with Grey Goose vodka, elderflower, grapes, mint and vino blanc) to Another One Bites the Duck.

A new look

The pub was established in 1868, but was refurbished only a few months ago. Everything from the floors, furniture, lighting, and even a new cool room under the bar were done up. Plus what used to be an old shed in the back is now a bar and grill, pumping out street favourites like hot dogs on the weekends.

Great, healthy food with wow factor

Head Chef Javier Perez Gonzalez is Spanish, and has touched on Mediterranean inspirations for the menu. The charcuterie board is a vibrant crowd-pleaser, draped with a selection of cured meats, pickles, and accompanied by thinly sliced Brasserie Bread quinoa & soya loaf.

Also on the starters menu, a trio of duck sliders à l’orange are mouthfuls of joy served on Brasserie Bread slider brioche buns. Descriptions on the menu are kept to a bare minimum, so that when the food arrives at your table, you can’t help but be wowed.

One of the owners, Karen Inge, is a dietitian and nutrition writer, so healthy offerings are ubiquitous throughout the menu with heaps of salads and veggies in the limelight. It’s still a pub though, so rest assured that you’ll find a chicken parma here – with a healthier approach of course.
