Tucked away in Regent Place, Blue Bird Coffee is a small, friendly cafe serving quality coffee in the heart of Sydney. If you’re hunting down excellent coffee in the Sydney CBD, especially after dark, you’ve come to the right place.

Inked with latte art on his forearm and donning a ‘My espresso brings all the girls to the yard’ tee, owner Karl is unmistakably passionate about coffee. He even travelled to Brisbane to check out boutique coffee roaster Bellissimo, and was so impressed he decided to serve their coffee at his new Sydney cafe. It’s in fact the only place in Sydney where you can get award-winning Bellissimo Coffee. There are three house blends as well as one single origin you can choose from. Take your pick from Mocha Java, Italian Dark Roast and Ultimo.

And if you’re a true coffee-head you may want to try Blue Bird’s cold drip coffee. Karl animatedly tells us that cold drip is a slow-brewing process akin to wine-making. It intensifies the flavour of the coffee, giving it more body and making it very smooth. If coffee isn’t your thing, Karl has sourced Chamellia Organic Tea from Melbourne.

Karl reveals that he loves the colour blue, and that blue birds are a symbol of hope in Asia. He designed the logo himself on his iPad, an emblem that portrays both a bird and a coffee bean. The cafe is fit out with splashes of blue, off-set by warm woods and feature lights, including a set of blue coffee cup lamps.

While the focus at Blue Bird is undoubtedly on coffee, what accompanies the perfect cup of coffee is important, too. You can complement your cuppa with Brasserie Bread sweets like coconut teacakes, friands, banana bread and pastries. Or if you’re after something more substantial, there’s a range of schiacciata sandwiches as well as breakfast rolls available. The punchy salami sandwich is layered with caramelised onions, cheese and rocket on Brasserie Bread’s Italian Schiacciata.
