At Brasserie Bread it’s ALTO olive oil month this July! With new olive oils in stock and even super-sized 4-litre tins available, you can take your pick from the entire ALTO olive oil range at our Sydney cafe. We’ve even been drizzling their beautiful extra virgin olive oil onto our soup specials! Delicious.

Robert and Westerly from ALTO are passionate about sustainable and organic olive growing. Three hours south-west of Sydney, near the township of Crookwell lies the breathtaking estate ALTO comprising 15,000 olive trees. At a high altitude (hence the name ALTO), in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range – the conditions are ideal for olive growing. The higher the groves, the more antioxidants are in the oil.

Extra virgin olive oil is essentially fresh juice of the olive. At ALTO (or Hopeful, as the ALTO estate is called), the olives are crushed within hours of the harvest. ALTO doesn’t use chemicals and avoids excessive heat, ensuring the olives and oils are healthy and fresh.

A crowd favourite is the Robust, the perfect complement for strong flavours. If you’re doing a bit of bread matching, go for stronger breads like sourdough or our olive & rosemary bread. For something lighter and fresher try the Delicate, which is good with seafood. Pair this olive oil with lighter flavours. White Italian breads like our Rustic Loaf are best partnered with ALTO’s Delicate olive oil.

We’ve also ordered Vividus and Organic olive oils. Certified organic and boasting a herby grassy scent with a spicy finish, ALTO’s Organic olive oil is perfect with our white sourdoughs. Vividus  is a finalist at the Delicious Produce Awards 2013 and is made with Hardy’s Mammoth olive. It’s not blended with any other olive, and is reminscient of tropical flavours of guava, pineapple and green bananas. Also on our shelves are citrusy oils like Lemon and Mandarin, as well as a Chardonnay Vinegar and Merlot Vinegar.

Tip: olive oil has a smoke point of 210°C, so it’s perfect for all types of home cooking.
