Meadow Cafe, Surry Hills

Drenched in natural sunlight and encased by white tiled walls, Meadow is built into the hill next to Prince Alfred Park Pool. Husband and wife Gary and Stephany, owners of Poolside Cafe at Andrew Boy Charlton (which just won 1 Cup at the Good Food Cafe Guide Awards), have brought their poolside expertise to Surry Hills.

Nestled away from the street, it’s an ‘oasis in the middle of the park,’ Stephany marvels. The cafe name is inspired by the curved design of the roof, creating a rooftop meadow. Just outside the cafe, tables are set amongst palm trees, making them the perfect spot to catch some sun.

FOOD – Keeping it local and organic where possible, Gary’s menu is littered with gloriously unique choices. Want an exotic post-swim brekky? Try the organic black sticky rice with coconut cream, fresh lime, banana and passionfruit pulp. Yum. But for something savoury, go for the hearty fried eggs, chorizo potato hash with jamon and a thick cut of our organic sourdough.

At lunchtime, get stuck into the Meadow burger on our brioche bun packed with gruyere, crispy speck, tomato, lettuce, mustard, pickle and served with chips. Out of their sandwich selection, their Reuben is all the rage – made with dill pickle on generous New York Rye slices and accompanied by chips.

The kids menu is delightful; whether it’s a plate of sliders (on our brioche buns) or spaghetti jaffles. And your little one will even get a free babycino to go with their meal!

DRINKS – The drinks at Meadow are unusual in the best kind of way. The salted caramel hot chocolate is superb (and has a cute bear on it!). The refreshing pineapple, ginger & mint frappe is perfect for a tropical fruit fix. Caffeine-heads can get a dose of Campos coffee and tea-lovers will enjoy loose leaf Rabbit Hole Teas.

And… (drumroll please) there are milkshakes with outlandishly awesome flavours like vanilla salted pretzel or the ingenious flakeshake. The flakeshake is a flavour explosion of malt and cornflakes. Cornflakes are soaked in milk, then strained to make cornflake milk ice cream. It’s like a liquid cereal brekky in the form of a sweet, sweet milkshake. And the crunchy texture from the malt just lifts it to a whole new level of amazing.

DETAILS – Stephany’s attention to detail is spot on. Jars, jugs, paper straws and baby blue blankets are as important to her as the food itself. Chevron patterns are painted with watercolour on their menus, bringing the water theme of the neighbouring pool to life. Love that.

Follow Meadow Cafe on Facebook to keep up to date with their weekday deals! At the moment you can bring a friend for lunch on Tuesday and enjoy your second meal for free. And here’s another tip: Prince Alfred Park Pool is offering free entry until November! Stephany tells me it’s heated to 27 degrees. Toasty!
