Remember Steph, our barista who makes amazing coffee? Well, she’s back for a second round of questions, and this time we quizzed her on another perennial favourite with our regulars – the humble Sandwich.
It’s a close race – but which sandwich is the most popular among customers?
I think the best selling sandwich would be the chicken club. The next one would probably be the croque monsieur. I always recommend toasting the sandwiches. On hot days, people tend to go for open sandwiches more, like the trout and cucumber on rye.
During the breakfast rush, it’s always the trout and poached eggs on wholemeal sourdough that’s the favourite. Along with the Florentine Panini. At lunch, because we get a lot of office workers, it would be the closed sandwiches because they’re really quick, even if they’re toasted, they’re out in a few minutes.
People usually have more desserts on the weekends. During school holidays, more people come in the afternoon for cake and coffee, but typically not our office workers unless they have a meeting of some sort.
Her favourite?
My favourite’s the Croque Monsieur. I just like the cheese, the ham and the rocket. I find the Chicken Club can be a little too filling for me at times. Salami’s really good if you feel like an indulgence, like pizza or something, that’s how I describe it to people: it’s like a pizza in a sandwich.
Best sandwich bread?
Best bread for toasting I’d say is the schiacciata. I think it toasts really nicely, it doesn’t take very long either. Sometimes I’ll have just ham and cheese on schiacciata, you don’t really need anything else – there’s so much flavour in the bread already. The white sourdough is good as well, it toasts up nicely and the crust is always so crisp and crunchy.
Most of our regulars get the same thing every time.
We have one customer who just has the egg granary every day. Just loves the egg granary and a teacake after. Most customers have the same dish every day, but some prefer to invent their own. One customer who comes in every day is happy with just toast and taramasalata.
