Fruit Mince Pies: The Best Kind of Tradition

There are many traditions associated with the holiday season. Hanging stockings, singing carols, stringing up lights… but our personal favourite is the little-known custom associated with fruit mince pies. It is said that if you eat a fruit mince pie each day, from Christmas through to the fifth of January you will have happiness for the next twelve months! We’re not sure how true that is, but given how delicious our fruit mince pies are we, we’re willing to give it a shot.

When did Meat Become Obsolete?

Although there’s nothing savoury about the modern fruit mince pie, the original medieval version of this much loved Christmas treat struck a far meatier note. The original pie housed an array of pre-boiled meats such as mutton or beef, cased in a simple dough of water and flour. The introduction of spice to the pie filling came later and due to the costly nature of spices, was an indication of wealth and prosperity.

The Taste of Christmas

It’s hard to say when meat was dropped from the pie recipe altogether, however, it’s clear that the fruit based pie is an enduring favourite for people of all ages and backgrounds. Our fruit mince pies – baked fresh and jam-packed with the highest quality ingredients – are the very essence of Christmas. The perfect medley of fresh green apples, raisins, sultanas, dried figs, currants, cherries, citrus peel, sliced almonds, cinnamon, nutmeg, mixed spice and cardamom are macerated in Napoleon brandy and Grand Marnier for six months before they’re freshly baked into our thin, buttery pastry every day.
