Mrs Sippy, Double Bay

Agata and I arrive at Mrs Sippy around lunchtime mid-week. One of the staff members asks us if we need anything, to which Agata cheekily replies in her one-of-a-kind Polish accent, “Yes! The chef!” That brings a few chuckles to the waiter’s face. He scurries off and finds Erik for us.

Open since August 2011, Mrs Sippy is a one stop shop for food lovers. Whether you’re making a stop for a quick coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner or cocktails, Mrs Sippy is an all-encompassing locale that caters to all tastes. You’ll find locals intermingling with city slickers and ladies of leisure. Mrs Sippy is essentially a French bistro, but it’s an upscale one that serves French cuisine with a modern twist.

Now we’re all aware that the Reuben sandwich is becoming uber-trendy of late. And the Mrs Sippy Reuben is making a splash! The beef is roasted in the oven overnight for 10 hours, our New York Rye is grilled with rendered duck fat (wow, might I add!), and it’s served with sauerkraut, horseradish relish, kosher dill pickle and fries. Yum.

Other dishes that feature our bread include the Slow braised pork belly with bread gazpacho and herb salad using our organic sourdough and the Applewood Smoked NY Hot Dog on our Grande Roll. If you’re in the mood for something more indulgent, go for the duck liver parfait with port syrup, which is served with our toasted brioche. A sweet option is the Plum dumpling with cinnamon sugar using our organic sourdough and croissants as crumbs.

I can tell that Erik is a big fan of Brasserie Bread. He emphasises that the loaves don’t have to look the same all the time – this is why artisan bread is so special. He’s also a firm believer that bread needs to add flavour to the dish. It’s not just a side of carbs. For him, the texture of bread needs to be dense and when it’s toasted it’s crisp outside, yet hot and soft inside.

He also reveals that customer have responded very positively when Mrs Sippy switched to our bread in April. The general consensus is that the bread looks more authentic, more handmade.

There are even plans in the works to open in Melbourne and Bali (this makes me very excited because Bali is like my second home, having lived in Indonesia for ten years). But hush hush, you didn’t hear it from us! 😉
